LA York Girl Home

Having been born and raised in LA I recently made the move out to NYC and it’s been an adventure. Here I will share my stories as I navigate my way though the city and try to make NYC a place called home.

Lady of Leisure No More

Been a crazy week but in a good way.  The week started off with 4 interviews that included a presentation and html skills test.  I felt like a job offer was going to come soon because I started to have a lot of job opportunities in the works.  My LA friend, Chelsea, was here for fashion week and my best friend from Tokyo, Marie, was in town.  I wasn't sure how I was going to make time for everything but I knew I could make it work.  As I was preparing for my interview Monday morning I got a phone call from 360i saying they wanted to extend me an offer.  I was beyond excited and couldn't even focus for my interview later that day.  I had been pursing the job at 360i for awhile and did an assignment for them as well.  It felt so good to know that all my hard work paid off and in less than 2 months I found a job in a new city on my own!  Even though I had this great offer I still went to my interview on Monday since I didn't want to be rude and had heard great things about the company.  However 360i needed me to start this week and I was really excited about their offer.

I canceled the rest of my interviews for the week and officially accepted the offer from 360i and start tomorrow (September 16).  I went in today for a couple hours and got a great feel for the office.  Very cool and modern as well as genuinely nice people.  Huge upgrade from my last companies office too.   There is beer on tap, a game room, and the offices are very modern and sleek.  And of course 2 monitors!

Check out some articles on the company:

Top Of The Rock

Went to the top of Rockefeller Center with some friends in town from Dallas and walked through Central Park.  Had an amazing weekend with them.  Here are some pictures from the Labor Day Weekend.

Natasha Bedingfield Preforms at Fashions Night Out

Went to Fashions Night out and saw my friends walk the runway in Ann Taylor's new line from Step Up Women's Network.  Also got to see Natasha Bedingfield preform live inside the Ann Taylor store on Madison Ave.  She sang all her best hits, it was amazing.  Here is some video footage I took.

The Calm Before the Storm

You would never guess by looking at the city on Friday that a hurricane was coming.  I even laid out on the roof and got some sun.

So Hurricane Irene did not do any physcial damage to my apartment but the city wenta little nuts.  Trader Joe's had a line to get into the store!

The subways also closed down for the weekend so practically nothing was open.  I went a little stir crazy in the apartment just waiting for something to happen.  The city was DEAD and it felt like any other rainy day.  I am so thankful I am safe and that it is over.  Sean and I survived our first "hurricane" together.  Though it was a lot of hype and I was wanting to see a little action.

Brooklyn Bridge Walk

Walked the Brooklyn Bridge with my friend Jaclyn and it was something I would recommend if you are in NYC.  Took the subway into Brooklyn and walked around a park in DUMBO (yes it is a strange name, Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) and the closest thing to a beach I have seen.

The bridge has an amazing  view of the city.  I also noticed a lot of people walk home on the bridge from work.  I thought I may be able to get a good work out going but there are way too many people and bikers that could almost take your head off coming around those corners.

At the end of my walk saw a cool house with a hot tub and a man with a GIANT SNAKE hanging out in the park.  I don't think that is legal!!

Another touristy thing I can check off the list though I haven't done too many!

SPX Pilates Comes to NYC

Went to my first SPX Pilates class in NYC today at SLT (Strenghten Lengthen Tone) Pilates uptown from my apartment.  Its been over a month since I have been on a Megaformer and it was SO nice to be back.  All the moves came back so naturally and I showed everyone in the class the positions since no one had taken SPX before.

I kept hearing Ky's voice in my head telling me to do him and The Studio MDR proud.  It wasn't a KYlates workout but it was a challenge.  I do have to say I miss my LA studio but hopefully SLT will become my new pilates home.

Just need Ky out here to teach some class and it will really feel like home.  Once you take a Ky class you know what I mean!  Even Sean is addicted.

Pilates and an Earthquake today its really starting to feel like LA in NYC.

Are Credit Card Minimums Allowed?

Been finding a lot of of places have a credit card minimum and after working with merchant processing with my friend Jaclyn at one of my jobs we know that merchants can't require a credit card minimum.  However I recently found out a new law was passed where merchants can charge a $10 minimum on credit cards. All over NYC merchants are telling me at least a $15 or $20 minimum some places even $30! I have no problem calling the merchant out and you should do the same in NYC or any city you live in.   Here is how to report their shenanigans.

$10 Minimum is allowed but no more. See the law below:

The bill is HR 4173: Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, and was put into law on July 21st, 2010. Section 1075 of this law (beginning on page 693 of this printing of the new law) amends the Electronic Fund Transfer Act of 1978. The part that restricts payment networks as to the minimum charge they can force merchants to accept (which, up until about a month ago, was $0.01) is detailed in Section 920(b)(3)(A)(i)(II) of the amended EFT Act. Beginning with the amended section 920(b)(3) (page 698 of the new law.)

New Debit Card Rules

Consumers might not be able to charge a piece of candy for $1.50 anymore. Store owners would now be allowed to set minimums on credit card transactions of up to $10, which they are currently not allowed to do.
